"The anger of the preadolescent is more intense and deeper than that of the younger child" and is "beginning a period of self-awareness". This anger is probably due to this deeper understanding of who they are and what they want out of life. When they can't these things, it results in a deeper more emotional understanding of pain.
I feel that the "recommendations for transforming middle school grade schools" is not realistic. These are all good ideas in theory but I would rather see concepts more applicable, like smaller class size and more exceptional education teachers. (ensuring sucess for all students)
Also, does anyone notice that the aurthor seems to think that middle school children are all using drugs and getting STDs. What exactly is a "healthy lifestyle" anyways. It just sounds like he has lost faith in the education system but yet his ideas for "transformation don't address this "self destructive" life style. I do, however, believe in the "ensuring sucess for all students." I really do not like the titles to these articles "A GOOD CITIZEN", "A CARING AND ETHICAL INDIVIDUAL" is this really for teachers to instruct. What a good citizen to me, might not be to the other. It is kind of laughable.

I agree that what is more important than necessarily transforming "junior high' to 'middle school' is the smaller class sizes and better prepared teachers. Maybe this is the same thing, I was a little confused on the reading, but (just to reiterate) I don't think that moving grades around is completely realistic, at least for the time being, but getting rid of funds that rely on standardized test scores and other bureaucratic top down methods of school management are more important that what we label middle education.
I agree, transforming middle schools from the state theyre currently in seems like more work than necessary. Rather than a focus on re-aligning grades there should be a focus on getting teachers out there who understand content and can help kids that are lost in transition.
I also question the whole good citizenship thing, because that is a really difficult concept to grasp.
I think that this is something accomplished simply by setting an example for students in class and showing them what a good citizen looks like...I guess Im not sure if that's a question or a statement though...
Hulk, I think you made a good point about what considers a healthy lifestyle and the authors claims about youth drug use and sexual escapades. Many adults are quick to judge today's youth about their lifestyle choices and risky behavior, which is unfair. Some recommendations for transforming middle schools are unrealistic but other could be implemented successfully. Lowering classroom size is a very important aspect to a good education but that is also a problem of funding. Schools are simply being over-run and the funding to support them is diminishing.
